Derma Rolller FAQ's
What is a derma-roller?
A derma roller is a handheld roller-device covered in microneedles which is rolled over the skin to create tiny punctures which trigger skin repair, leading to the creation of new collagen which helps with firmness, strength, suppleness, and elasticity of the skin.
What are some benefits of derma-rolling?
Whether you are someone who suffers from acne, dry skin, weak skin, scarring, aged-looking skin, and more – it’s hard to imagine skin that cannot be improved from derma rolling. Here are our favourite benefits:
- Scarring
By stimulating the elastin and collagen present in the skin, scars appear less visible and, in some cases, disappear completely.
- Premature Aging
By thickening, repairing, strengthening, and upping the elasticity of skin, derma rolling can have an anti-aging effect by giving skin a stronger, more youthful appearance.
- Hyper-pigmentation
By helping to shed the top layer of the skin and produce melanocyte, derma rolling can diminish the effects of and even eliminate hyperpigmentation.
- Pore Size
Derma rolling can help to reduce the size of enlarged pores by producing collagen, as well as by thickening the epidermis.
- Hair Loss and Growth
Derma rolling can promote hair growth by increasing blood flow to the hair follicles
How does derma-rolling work?
Derma-rolling creates tiny punctures on the skin which triggers skin repair, leading to the creation of new collagen. A bodily protein made up of amino-acids, collagen is the part of the connective tissue that helps in firmness, strength, suppleness, and elasticity of the skin. The short-term wounding of the skin is intended to trigger the production of a protein that will actually in turn strengthen the skin to a healthier level than before.
Where on my body can I use the derma-roller?
Derma-rolling can be carried out on almost any part of the body. Including arms, legs, thighs, face, neck and even the eye area. The only exception is the eyelids because the skin there is too thin.
How often should I derma-roll?
Please use this as a recommendation only. Derma-rolling can be used more or less depending on how your skin feels.
- For 0.5mm - once a week
- For 1.0mm - once a fortnight
- For 1.5mm - once a month
How much pressure should I apply when derma-rolling?
We suggest to always start rolling gently and then gradually increase the pressure over time. You don’t have to worry about pushing too hard as there is no risk of getting the needles deeper than their own length.
What should I do before, during and after derma-rolling?
- Clean your face using a natural face wash.
- Spray your derma-roller with sanitiser spray and wait for it to dry.
- Once dry, begin to derma-roll and slowly apply more pressure.
- When you’re done make sure to spray the derma-roller with sanitiser spray once again and let it air dry in the box that it came in.
- Once the derma-roller is dry, close the box so your derma-roller needles are safe.
When can I expect to see results?
Everyone’s skin differs and therefore results are different. Some customers see results after a couple of uses and some after a couple of months, however, consistency is key to seeing great results.
How long does a derma-roller last?
It all depends on the condition of your derma-roller and how often you use it. For example, if you use your roller once every 2/3 weeks it could easily last you up to 6 months. Just remember to take care of your derma-roller properly (sanitise it before and after every treatment, keep it in the original box to stop the needles from touching any surface and bending etc.)
How do I know when to replace my derma-roller?
If while rolling you feel that your skin is being pulled, that is a sign that it's time to get a new roller. If you see a bent needle, replace your roller as it can cause damage to your skin. Generally, a derma-roller lasts around 6-12 months.
Why do I have to sanitise my derma-roller?
Sanitising your derma-roller is important as it kills any bacteria left on the needles, making it safe for your next use. Always sanitise your derma-roller right before and after each use.
